Ways to Make Your Residential Kitchen More Functional Without a Messy Remodel

by Heather Howell

Today's kitchens are more functional than ever. This is something you should have in mind if you want to modernise your kitchen without taking away from its traditional roots.

There are several things you can do to increase the functionality of your traditional kitchen. While some may require major modifications to the initial design and layout of your kitchen, others involve making simple but mighty changes to your kitchen space.

If you want to improve the efficiency of your kitchen space without an intrusive and costly remodel, the following tips can be useful to you.

Utilise your corner space

Virtually every kitchen has a corner. While the corner space in many traditional kitchens remains empty because standard storage solutions won't fit, this doesn't mean you can't make good use of yours.

From under-cabinet kitchen storage to wall-hanging shelves and spice racks, there are many ways to turn those tricky kitchen corners into the extra storage space your kitchen lacks. To draw visual interest to your kitchen's corner storage, use paint colours that contrast the rest of the storage in the room.

Improve your kitchen lighting

For your kitchen space to be fully functional, it should be well-lit regardless of the time of the day or night. This means proper natural lighting and artificial lighting are essential.

If your kitchen is dark during the daytime, it means you are not taking advantage of natural light. To brighten up your kitchen, consider installing window treatments that let in more natural light. Adding a window backsplash below the kitchen cabinets can also bring more natural light into the room.

If you just have overhead lights in your kitchen, adding task lighting systems such as under-cabinet lights and pendants can help make your kitchen more beautiful and functional when it gets dark outside.

Keep your kitchen organised

Proper kitchen organisation involves keeping your kitchen surfaces clutter-free and ensuring everything is kept in the right spot. Consider using hooks, rods, trays, cabinet drawer inserts, magnetic caddies and many more kitchen organisation aids to keep your kitchen items within reach.

The modern kitchen has come a long way since the days it was used for cooking and cleaning duties alone. These days, it has become a place where friends and family converge to share a meal and socialise. About Me

Replacing your bathroom tiles

We have a bathroom with a really nice layout and structure, but the colour scheme is so dated. I can't believe anyone thought that peach tiles with a floral border was a good idea! I don't have a lot of money, but I want to replace some of the most dated items with more modern bathroom fixtures to create a modern and light-filled bathroom. This blog has tips on remodelling a dated bathroom on a budget and should be useful for anyone who is tired of their peach (or pastel) bathrooms but hasn't been able to afford a full bathroom remodel yet. We've done bathroom remodels a couple times now and hopefully our experiences can help you!
