Tips When Designing the Cabinetry for a Small Bathroom

by Heather Howell

If you're renovating your bathroom, you need to put a lot of thought into the storage so that you can feel organised and keep your bathroom neat and tidy.  Storage options include the vanity, medicine cabinet, and additional cabinets. If you have a small bathroom, you should keep this in mind when planning the storage, as some choices will make your bathroom feel more spacious than others. If you're ready for new bathroom cabinets, consider the following options.

Bathroom Vanity

While many vanities are floor mounted, you'll maximise bathroom space by installing a wall-mounted unit. This will leave valuable floor area free, which will make the room feel larger and less crowded. Other options include a freestanding vanity on legs that allows the flooring to be seen underneath, which will give the impression of more space.

Recessed Medicine Cabinet

Because medicine cabinets connect to the wall, they provide handy storage that doesn't cover the floor. These cupboards can protrude into the room, however, at a higher level. To make the cabinet as minimal as possible, recess it into the wall, either partially or fully. That way, the mirror will almost sit flush with the wall, and the room will feel more open.

Minimal Style

One styling principle to stick to when trying to make a room feel larger is to minimise visual detailing on the furniture and components. Extra lines, curves, contours, and details can make a room feel crowded and cluttered, especially if it's compact. Thus, plan to install bathroom cabinets that are as sleek as possible while keeping in tune with the room decor. You could install cabinet doors with a groove along the top instead of handles. Try to avoid ornate elements on the doors and stick with a smooth, even surface.

Pale Colours

Pale colours reflect more light than darker hues which is why you're better off with white or pale coloured cupboards. Reflective surfaces brighten up a bathroom and make it feel larger. Conversely, darker cabinets tend to absorb light. The cabinetry finish also affects its reflectiveness. Polished finishes bounce more light around a room than matte materials.

Ample Cabinets

If you want to build extra cabinets in the bathroom, blend them seamlessly into the surroundings to reduce contrast and busyness. This may mean installing cabinets the same colour as the adjacent wall or tiles. Don't skimp on necessary storage, as your bathroom can then be crowded with cosmetics and items spread over the counter that don't have anywhere to live.

About Me

Replacing your bathroom tiles

We have a bathroom with a really nice layout and structure, but the colour scheme is so dated. I can't believe anyone thought that peach tiles with a floral border was a good idea! I don't have a lot of money, but I want to replace some of the most dated items with more modern bathroom fixtures to create a modern and light-filled bathroom. This blog has tips on remodelling a dated bathroom on a budget and should be useful for anyone who is tired of their peach (or pastel) bathrooms but hasn't been able to afford a full bathroom remodel yet. We've done bathroom remodels a couple times now and hopefully our experiences can help you!
