Although your parents getting old is an inevitability of life, it can still be a hard reality to come to terms with. Once they start to lose some of their faculties and have diminished mobility, you have to deliberate on how best to care for them in their sunset years. Nursing homes are one option you can choose, but not everyone is capable of affording this type of around-the-clock care. A cost-efficient alternative would be to take in your parents and have them live with you. But prior to doing that, you need to ensure that your house is safe enough for your senior parents. One place you can start is your bathrooms. If you will designate one bathroom to your elderly parents, here are some renovations to consider that will facilitate aged care in your home.

Paint the bathroom

You may think that painting the bathroom is only about enhancing the visual appeal of the room, but this is not entirely true. In addition to boosting the attractiveness of the space, a new paint job will help with depth perception. As people advance in age, they can lose some of their vision. Thus, your parent may have difficulty with depth perception, which can make them prone to missteps and falling. The more contrasting the colours are, the easier it will be for your senior parents to distinguish different parts of the bathroom.

Strategically placed grab bars

Grab bars are one of the most vital inclusions to have when remodelling your bathroom for elderly parents. These are safety features that function to provide support for anyone whose mobility is compromised. Thus, it is essential to choose the best areas to install these elements so that your parents are not at risk of skidding and possibly breaking a bone. From in the shower to next to the toilet, have your remodelling contractor include as many grab bars as needed.

Even out the flooring

An uneven floor plan in bathrooms can be a result of many things. For instance, there could be a step on the doorway leading into the bathroom, or perhaps the layout has some corners that give the room an odd shape. These features may boost the architectural appeal of the space, but they are extremely unsafe for senior citizens, particularly those with deteriorating eyesight. It is recommended to have your remodelling contactor even out the entire flooring to create a seamless transition to every part of the bathroom.
